This dry-laid (later mortar-pointed) stone pier was a later addition to the bridge when it started to sag. Its presence diverted the stream channel to the far side, causing a scouring issue at the base of the far abutment. With the timber repairs completed, and the camber of the bridge restored, Kentucky officials decided the pier had to go. The Conservancy is using the pier stone for the new approach ramps.

The south abutment. Notice how much of the stream bank has eroded away . . . several feet just since the time the abutments were mortar-pointed in the mid-to-late 1900's!

The abutments were built dry-laid, but mortar-pointed in the mid-to-late 1900's. The Conservancy will repair the damaged tops and ends of the wingwalls.
