This dry-laid (later mortar-pointed) stone pier was a later addition to the bridge when it started to sag. Its presence diverted the stream channel to the far side, causing a scouring issue at the base of the far abutment. With the timber repairs completed, and the camber of the bridge restored, Kentucky officials decided the pier had to go. The Conservancy is using the pier stone for the new approach ramps.
