Hillside garden needed retaining walls to stop erosion. Typical new home construction on a hillside, More rock than dirt. Stone is all local. Thanks to DSC for the 2-day workshop, and thanks to my wife and partner, who lifted and carried at least half of the stones. Comments and critiques are welcome.

Northern Virginia's Rock Walls

Throughout the northern Virginia counties of Loudoun, Fauquier and Rappahannock (and others), the rock walls that surrround the farms and line the roads are made of fieldstone that has been gathered and stacked around the perimeters of the farms and roads. I have always been intrigued by their construction and in particular, the incorporation of the random shapes and sizes of of the rock. Forget one over two, two over one.

Prior to finding the DSC website and this community, in my quest to learn how to build a dry stack stone wall, I spent a day and half with a farm hand who took the time to show me his technique and basics rules. Hopefully, I'll be able to take a DSC workshop and learn more.

I hope that by sharing these pictures, others will see and appreciate what I feel is a distinct style typical of the rural northern Virginia area. I'll try to update my albums from time to time.
