DSC’s 9th Annual National Dry Stone Walling Competition:

After taking last year off, we are pleased to announce the return of  the Conservancy’s Annual National Walling Competition to be held at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill near Harrodsburg, Kentucky on Saturday, November 2, 2013!

Come and join us for a day in the country to watch or participate in the nation’s only annual drystone walling competition which draws competitors from across America and beyond!  At our most recent competition, 24 wallers from five states competed for top cash and tool prizes in novice, amateur and professional classes while restoring over 150 linear feet of historic rock fence in just 8 hours!  Now that is something to see!

Drystone wallers interested in competing are invited to download the registration form from our website at www.drystone.org or click this link:

Dry Stone Boot Camp:

You may also be interested in participating in some or all of a series of activities that have collectively and affectionately been called Dry Stone Boot Camp by previous participants!

Workshops:

An Introductory 2-Day Workshop on October 26 & 27 (Sat/Sun) and a Combined Introductory & Advanced 2-Day Workshop on October 30 & 31 (Wed/Thurs) will be offered at Shaker Village prior to the Competition. These workshops give participants the opportunity to acclimate to Kentucky’s limestone and prepare themselves for the specifications required for the Competition and Certification exams to follow.  Training in wallheads and retaining walls will also be covered during the Advanced Workshop for the benefit of certification candidates.  To register, click here:

Certification:

Certification candidates who also participate in the Competition on Saturday can arrange for the judges to score their wall sections for their Certification exam at the same time.  If they pass, their Competition scores will count as their Certification timed test.  Otherwise, they will have another opportunity on Monday following the Competition for the group Certification Timed Tests at Shaker Village on November 4, 2013.  Candidates can arrange to build their required special features at the site anytime during the 2 weeks prior to the group exams.

Or, you can just sign up for the Certification Exams.  At least once a year, the Conservancy offers group certification exams as a way to keep the costs down for the candidates.  Candidates can arrange for their own exams at any time, but must pay considerably more.  For those going for Journeyman and Master-level certification, for which two examiners are required, the cost to participate in the group exams can be hundreds of dollars less expensive than arranging it on your own.

Summary:

Beginners Workshop: Saturday-Sunday, October 26 & 27

Beginners/Advanced Workshop: Wednesday-Thursday, October 30 & 31

Competition: Saturday, November 2

Certification Timed Exams: Monday, November 4 (with special features arranged for the weeks prior)
