To build a more complete picture of dry stone projects across the continent than any one organization could achieve alone, we’ve launched the North American Dry Stone Survey—a collaborative, open‑source mapping initiative that relies on user‑submitted data to identify, document, and showcase dry stone structures. By using open‑source map tools, contributors can easily upload project locations, photos, and details, and explore submissions from other masons. Many of these sites can even be visited in person.
The North American Dry Stone Survey fosters collaboration among researchers, businesses, and heritage organizations by making it easier to preserve and promote both historic and contemporary dry stone work. Because the platform is open and community‑driven, the database will grow faster and more accurately than traditional mapping efforts, supporting conservation planning, public education, and increased visibility for your craft and your business.
This initiative empowers both professionals and enthusiasts to take an active role in stewarding dry stone traditions and celebrating the skill, creativity, and heritage embodied in these structures. Once enough data is collected an interactive map for the public to explore will be launched.
